Promises Kept

Building Homes, Rebuilding Lives – For Those Who Guaranteed Ours

Bob Hamer

On September 11, 2001, the United States homeland was attacked on a scale not seen since the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor some sixty years earlier.

Thousands of Americans volunteered to join those already serving. Many went into harm’s way to defend their country. Many who would deploy had during that 9/11 attack been in elementary school.

Of the more than 7,000 servicemembers who lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan, tens of thousands were wounded, many losing multiple limbs or their eyesight, beginning a life-long process of recovery and adapting to new challenges.

They inspired John Gonsalves, a home builder in Massachusetts, who started what in 2004 would become Homes For Our Troops. To date, more than 400 specially adapted homes have been built nationwide, with many more in the construction and planning stages.

Witness and share 22 inspiring stories of how these amazing women and men returning from service face new challenges head on – adapting, overcoming, and persevering with the help of their specially adapted homes.

These Americans have prevailed as they achieve their goals and rebuild their lives. Their inspiring stories exemplify why we vow to ensure that those returning from the War on Terror with life-altering injuries receive the support they deserve – support in service to a promise made by this nation. A promise exchanged for service to this nation. A Promise Kept by Homes For Our Troops… and now, by you.

Proceeds from this book go to help Homes For Our Troops continue building mortgage-free homes; building homes and rebuilding lives, for those who guaranteed ours.
